RED Grants

Funding Economic Growth Across the South West

Supporting business growth, investment and regional capability.

The Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants program provides funding for projects that create jobs, strengthen industries and support long-term economic growth across the South West of Western Australia.

Delivered by the South West Development Commission on behalf of the Western Australian Government, RED Grants invest in locally driven projects that encourage innovation, attract investment and build regional capability.

Since its inception, the RED Grants program has committed more than $60 million to projects across regional Western Australia, helping businesses and organisations deliver lasting economic benefits for their communities.

In the South West, the South West Development Commission manages the application, assessment and contract management process for the program.

Assessment Criteria

Every RED Grants application is assessed against a range of criteria to determine its potential economic benefit, project readiness and value to the South West. The guidance below outlines what assessors are looking for and will help you prepare a strong application.

Write your application for someone with little or no prior knowledge of your business or project. Clearly explain what you are proposing, why it is needed and the economic outcomes it will deliver.

Strong applications:

  • Clearly explain the project and its purpose.
  • Demonstrate alignment with one or more RED Grant objectives.
  • Include measurable outcomes and supporting evidence.
  • Show project readiness and financial capacity.
  • Explain the broader benefits for the South West economy.

Consider using the SMART framework when describing your project:

  • Specific – What will the project achieve?
  • Measurable – How will success be measured?
  • Achievable – How will the project be delivered?
  • Relevant – Why is the project important?
  • Time-bound – When will it be completed?

Your application should demonstrate how the project contributes to one or more of the RED Grant objectives. Address only the objectives relevant to your project and provide measurable evidence wherever possible.

Assessors consider projects that support:

  • Sustainable jobs
  • Expanding or diversifying industry
  • Developing skills and capability
  • Attracting new investment
  • Increasing productivity

Projects should be ready to commence within six months of funding approval and generally be completed within one to two years.

Strong applications demonstrate:

  • Financial capacity to deliver the project.
  • Secured funding and cash contribution.
  • Required approvals are in place or well progressed.
  • A realistic project budget supported by quotes.
  • Appropriate risk management.
  • A clear delivery timeline.

Business applicants must contribute a minimum 50% cash co-contribution. Applicants who exceed the minimum contribution may be more competitive.

RED Grants support projects that improve productivity, encourage innovation and strengthen regional industries.

Consider how your project:

  • Introduces new technology or equipment.
  • Improves efficiency or productivity.
  • Creates new products or services.
  • Diversifies your business.
  • Adds value to existing products or supply chains.
  • Improves competitiveness.

Applications should demonstrate benefits that extend beyond the applicant’s own organisation.

Examples include:

  • Supporting local suppliers and contractors.
  • Creating regional employment.
  • Developing apprenticeships or traineeships.
  • Encouraging industry collaboration.
  • Supporting emerging industries.
  • Increasing investment and economic activity across the South West.

Before submitting your application, make sure you have:

  • Clearly explained your project.
  • Addressed the relevant RED Grant objectives.
  • Included measurable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated project readiness.
  • Provided supporting quotes and financial information.
  •  Explained the regional economic benefits.
